Salamanca Trims November Meeting Calendar Around Holidays
Salamanca has canceled the Common Council meetings that would have fallen on Nov. 11 and Nov. 25 because of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. One meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in the courtroom of the municipal building, and the mayor can call a special meeting if needed. The Fire Commission's November meeting is canceled, with its next regular session set for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1. The Board of Public Works also skips its Nov. 11 meeting and next meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino Again Earns AAA Four Diamond Rating
The Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca was again among the honorees at AAA's annual Four Diamond Awards. The Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls also kept its Four Diamond status. The Olean Times Herald reported the recognition for the two Seneca Resorts & Casinos properties.

Salamanca Sets Halloween Parade, Costume Contest and Trick-or-Treat Hours
The Salamanca Common Council approved plans for the city's annual Halloween celebrations. The parade steps off down Main Street at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, followed by a costume contest at the Ray Evans Seneca Theater. A trunk-or-treat event follows at 6:30 p.m. at Jefferson Street Park. Trick-or-treating runs 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Salamanca Students Gain Career Experience Through Summer Workforce Program
A group of Salamanca City Central School District students spent part of their summer in the district's Youth Workforce Development program, working alongside professional staff to explore potential future careers. Participants took on real roles supporting district programs and services, including staffing the school's food truck, giving them hands-on exposure to workplace responsibilities before the new school year. The program is funded through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services and is aimed at building career-readiness skills among local youth. District officials say the initiative gives students practical experience they can draw on as they plan for future employment.

Salamanca City Schools Set Back-to-School Picnics for Aug. 25-26
Salamanca City Central School District is holding two welcome-back picnics ahead of the 2026-27 school year, giving families a chance to meet teachers and staff before classes begin. Prospect Elementary's picnic runs Aug. 25, followed by a picnic for Seneca Intermediate and Salamanca High School students on Aug. 26, both from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The informal gatherings let students and parents reconnect with school staff over a shared meal ahead of the new year. District officials say families are welcome to attend either or both events regardless of which building their children attend.

Seneca-Iroquois National Museum Marks 49th Anniversary Aug. 4
The Seneca-Iroquois National Museum at the Onohsagwe:de' Cultural Center in Salamanca will celebrate its 49th anniversary with a milestone event on August 4. The museum's permanent galleries, including "They Work" and "On the Mother's Side," showcase traditional Seneca craftsmanship, clan structure and cultural history alongside a preserved, reassembled log cabin. Earlier this year the museum also put out a call for artists for a 2026 exhibit addressing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Persons, following a community walk and dinner held at the center in May. The anniversary celebration highlights the museum's long-running role as a home for both historical exhibits and contemporary Seneca artists in Cattaraugus County.

Longhaus of Lone Opens on Main Street With Native American Art and Quilting Supplies
Artist Faye Lone has opened Longhaus of Lone, a new Main Street business in Salamanca specializing in authentic Native American art, designs and high-quality quilting supplies. Lone, whose own work has been featured through the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum's artist program, stocks the shop with pieces from Native artists across the region alongside her own creations. The opening adds another storefront to Salamanca's small arts and retail corridor, not far from the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum. It gives local residents and visitors a dedicated local outlet for Haudenosaunee-made art and craft supplies.

Two Seneca Nation Councilors Launch Bids for Nation President
Seneca Nation Councilor Odie Porter announced her candidacy for Nation President on July 28, running on a five-point platform covering economic development, quality of life, language and culture preservation, environmental and water protection, and resolving the decades-long dispute over the New York Thruway's path through Seneca land. A four-year councilmember and vice chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Porter previously managed a $333 million budget as budget director at the University of Kansas; if elected, she would become the Nation's first woman president. Current President JC Seneca and former President Todd Gates both endorsed her bid. Fellow Councilor Tina Abrams also entered the race the same day, setting up a contested field ahead of the Nation's September 18 caucus and November 3 general election.

Salamanca Schools Pause Humanoid Robot Program Amid Privacy Concerns
Salamanca City Central School District put its plan to deploy a nearly $60,000 humanoid robot, nicknamed 'Sally,' on hold after state officials and the statewide teachers union raised objections. The robot, built by Nevada-based Realbotix, was intended to support high school robotics and technology students rather than replace a classroom teacher. State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa flagged unresolved student data-privacy questions and pushed back on characterizations of the robot as a 'tutoring platform,' while New York State United Teachers criticized the vendor's ties to adult-product manufacturing. The district announced Friday, July 24, 2026, that the pilot would remain paused while it works out enhanced data-privacy agreements with the state and hears from the community.

City of Salamanca and Seneca Nation Break Ground on Crowley Park Skatepark
The City of Salamanca and the Seneca Nation held a joint groundbreaking for a new skatepark at Crowley Park on River Street. The project, designed and built by Seattle-based Grindline Skateparks, is funded through a partnership that includes matching support from the Seneca Nation along with grants from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation. The city is providing the site, lighting and ongoing maintenance under the collaborative arrangement. Final landscaping and a ribbon-cutting grand opening were planned for spring 2026, giving Salamanca-area youth a dedicated skating facility.
