Alfred State Welcomes Record-Sized Class at New Student Convocation
Alfred State College held its annual New Student Convocation on Aug. 29, drawing roughly 1,500 incoming Pioneers into the campus community for the 2026-27 year. The class arrives on the heels of more than 12,500 applications this year, a new record for the college and part of a multi-year enrollment surge that has pushed total student numbers toward their highest point since the 1980s. Vice President for Academic Affairs Carrie Cokely, President Steve Mauro and Student Senate President Nakido Guy-Diaz addressed the newcomers, urging them to get involved on campus, build relationships with faculty, and take advantage of hands-on learning. College officials point to a sharp rise in out-of-state interest and growing attendance at open houses and orientation events as drivers of the growth.
Allegany County Farmer Neighbor Dinner Set for Sept. 30 in Alfred Station
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Allegany County announced its annual Farmer Neighbor Dinner will be held Sept. 30 at the Lake Lodge in Alfred Station. The evening, co-hosted with the county's Soil & Water Conservation District, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency and Farm Bureau, opens at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and agricultural business exhibits before a farm-to-table dinner featuring locally grown and raised products. This year's guest speaker is John Wagner, senior director of county strategic partnerships for New York Farm Bureau. Organizers are asking attendees to preregister by Sept. 15 through Cornell Cooperative Extension's Allegany County office.
Second Annual IMPACT Walk and Run Set for Aug. 29 on West Almond Trail System
IMPACT: Friends Improving Allegany County Trails, Inc. is hosting its second annual trail walk and run on Saturday, Aug. 29, starting from the NYSDEC Phillips Creek State Forest parking area on Route 244 just west of Alfred. The event routes participants through the Phillips Creek, Turnpike, and Palmer's Pond state forests that make up the West Almond Trail System, with divisions ranging from a 5K walk up to a new 25K trail run for more experienced racers. Members of IMPACT receive a discounted registration rate, and proceeds go toward the group's ongoing work maintaining and improving public trails in Allegany County. Organizers say the growing event reflects rising interest in the county's state forest trail network.
Alfred University to Lead Development of AI-Assisted Battery Storage, Microgrid Controller
Alfred University's Inamori School of Engineering is partnering with clean-tech startup Ranial Systems Inc. on a project to build an artificial intelligence-assisted controller for grid-scale battery storage, commercial and industrial microgrids, and equipment-manufacturer integrations. Chandan Kumar, an assistant professor of computer science at the Inamori School, is serving as principal investigator on the effort, which got underway in late June. The work is being funded through New Energy New York, a state-backed clean-energy initiative supporting regional research and development. University officials say the collaboration positions Alfred as a contributor to next-generation grid technology as demand grows for reliable renewable-energy storage.
Alfred Church Nears Finish Line on Historic Organ Restoration
Trustees at Union University Church in Alfred say their campaign to restore the sanctuary's 1930 Moller pipe organ, known as the 'Rosebush' organ, has cleared its original $25,000 goal by $3,500. The organ was given in memory of Sara Burdick Rosebush, a talented musician whose sons donated it to the church nearly a century ago. With mechanical repairs largely funded, trustees have opened a second phase of fundraising to cover roughly $6,500 in remaining costs, including returning the facade pipes to their original gold bronze finish after decades painted first white and then brown. Restoration work is being handled by organ builder Jason Klinger of Middleport. The church says the project will preserve both the sound and appearance of the century-old instrument for the congregation and community.
Alfred Ceramic Art Museum to Reopen in September with Two New Exhibitions
The Alfred Ceramic Art Museum on the Alfred University campus closed its summer shows on July 19 and will remain shut through early September while staff install its next round of exhibitions. When it reopens on September 10, the museum will debut "Paula Murray: Resilience," a survey of the Canadian ceramic artist's vessel-based work exploring breaking, healing and transformation, alongside "Figure Out: Catastrophe or Regeneration," an installation of slip-cast figures by Paolo Porelli. Both shows open with a joint public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Both exhibits run through December 20. The museum, housed at Main and Pine streets on the Alfred University campus, holds nearly 8,000 ceramic objects and is closely tied to the university's internationally known ceramic art program.
Village of Alfred to Mill and Repave South Main Street
The Village of Alfred's Department of Public Works began milling South Main Street on July 27, with repaving scheduled for the first week of August. The project is part of routine road maintenance overseen by the village's public works crew. Residents and businesses along the corridor should expect construction activity and possible short delays during both phases of the work. The village posted the schedule on its official website so drivers can plan around the closures.
15-Year-Old Maggie Bai Wins MostArts Festival's Young Pianist Competition in Alfred
The MostArts Festival at Alfred University wrapped its tenth season with a Grand Finale Concert on July 18, where 15-year-old Maggie Bai of Newton, Massachusetts took first prize in the Young Pianist Competition. Bai's win comes with a $10,000 award, an invitation to perform at the festival's 2027 season opener, and eligibility to become a Young Steinway Artist. Second and third prizes went to William Feng of Seattle and a tie between Daniel Beal of Moscow, Idaho and Jeremy Liu of Naperville, Illinois. The finale concert, led by guest conductor Kathleen Horvath and the International MostArts Festival Orchestra, also featured the world premiere of composer Gabriel Jenks' "As Luck" alongside works by Morton Gould and Chopin.
