Seneca Nation Councilor Odie Porter announced her candidacy for Nation President on July 28, running on a five-point platform covering economic development, quality of life, language and culture preservation, environmental and water protection, and resolving the decades-long dispute over the New York Thruway's path through Seneca land. A four-year councilmember and vice chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, Porter previously managed a $333 million budget as budget director at the University of Kansas; if elected, she would become the Nation's first woman president. Current President JC Seneca and former President Todd Gates both endorsed her bid. Fellow Councilor Tina Abrams also entered the race the same day, setting up a contested field ahead of the Nation's September 18 caucus and November 3 general election.
Great Valley/Communal
The Town of Great Valley is holding its fourth annual town picnic at 6 p.m. Friday at Baugh Family Park. The gathering has become a summer tradition for the town, drawing residents together for a low-key community meal and social evening. The event is organized as a town-sponsored community gathering rather than a fundraiser, reflecting Great Valley's continued investment in small-town communal events. Residents were encouraged to attend and bring family for the evening event.
Cuba/Libraries
The Friends of the Cuba Library are selling $25 tickets online for "Cheers, Cheese & Chocolate," a 21-and-over wine-tasting fundraiser set for the Cuba Circulating Library on August 2. Organizers say space is limited and tickets will not be sold at the door, so residents are asked to reserve online in advance through the Friends group's website. Net proceeds from the event will go toward upgrading the kitchen in the library's community room, a space used for library programs and public meetings. The fundraiser is one of several the volunteer Friends group runs each year to support the library, which has served the community since 1872.
