Yorkshire/Political
The Yorkshire Town Board voted 5-0 on April 20, 2026 to cancel its 2026 summer recreation program, citing staffing shortages and an inability to compete with other area programs. The free, grant-funded six-week program had typically served about 50 children with weekday activities and meals from early July through mid-August. Parents and children rallied afterward, with program director Jodie Perrington saying, "We would just like to know answers," while parent Michelle Ferrington called the board's decision "cold and heartless." Families said they would be willing to raise funds or pay fees to keep the program running, but Town Supervisor Marcia Lexer declined to offer further explanation for the cut.
Almond/Communal
Volunteers with the Allegany County Democratic Committee spent an hour on April 20 picking up litter along Route 21 at the Interstate 86 eastbound on-ramp in Almond. The group has maintained this stretch of roadway since 2021 through the state Department of Transportation's Adopt-a-Highway program, choosing the spot because it serves as a highway gateway into the county. Organizers supplied safety gear and asked participants to bring boots and gloves for the cleanup. The event was open to any community member willing to pitch in.
